Softball Falls To Top-Seed Longwood; GWU Faces Liberty In Elimination Game Friday Morning

BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Megan Champion's RBI single in the top of the first gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a 1-0 lead, but Big South Player of the Year Megan Baltzell smashed a grand slam to highlight a 13-run fourth inning to send the Lancers to a 15-2 victory (5 inn.) over the Gardner-Webb softball team on Thursday afternoon at the Big South Tournament.

With the loss, Gardner-Webb will face Liberty tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. in an elimination game, with the winner advancing to play Friday evening at 9:30 p.m. and the loser being eliminated from the tournament.

Kellie Beres led the way offensively for the Dogs with two hits on the afternoon and Amanda Gomes continued her great play, driving in the second run of the game for GWU.

Gardner-Webb continued its momentum from the extra-inning victory against Radford into the game against the Lancers, loading the bases with no outs in the inning. The Runnin' Bulldogs looked poised for a big inning, but Scarlett Harris and Gomes each recorded an out, and quickly GWU was down to two outs with the bases still loaded, but Champion came through with an RBI single to right field to drive in Gibbons. Cumiskey tried to score from second on Champion's single, but Longwood made a great throw home to tag Cumiskey out to end the inning.

The Runnin' Bulldogs continued to hold a 1-0 lead until the second, when Chelsea Sciacca led off with a solo blast to tie the game for the Lancers. Longwood proceeded to load the bases with one out, but Ashley Wark recorded two-straight outs to escape the jam without surrending the go-ahead run.

Baltzell came up to bat for her second AB of the game in the bottom of the third and after a first pitch strike, the senior catcher sent the ball over the center field wall to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead.

Baltzell would strike again with her second home run of the day, a grand slam in the fourth to break the game open for Longwood. The Lancers hit back-to-back-to-back home runs and totaled 13 runs on 10 hits in the inning and would go on to defeat Gardner-Webb 15-2 in five innings.
