Yelverton Named Second-Team Capital One Academic All-America

AUSTIN, Texas – Gardner-Webb men's golfer Matt Yelverton earned a spot on the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America Men's At-Large Second Team, which was announced Thursday.

Yelverton (Weddington, N.C. / Weddington HS) is the first golfer to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors since the program moved to NCAA Division I in 2000-2001.

The biology major is one of six student-athletes who earned a spot on the Academic All-America team this year with a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA. The teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

It is the latest on a long list of honors for Yelverton this season. He was one of the Big South Conference's Christenberry Award winners, which recognizes the student-athlete with the highest GPA in the league – and was named 2015 Big South Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Yelverton was also a first-team Academic All-District III At-Large selection in May, which made him eligible for the All-America honor.

On the course, Yelverton ranked 15th this past season with a 73.65 stroke average and carded his best 54-hole score in the Big South Championship in May. He shot an even-par 216 (70-74-72) to finish 14th overall.

A 2014 GCAA/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar, Yelverton competed in all 122 of Gardner-Webb's tournament rounds during his four-year career. He was a three-time All-Academic Team honoree in the Big South and earned a spot on the Presidential Honor Roll all four years.

Yelverton finished his career with a 74.32 scoring average and seven top-10 finishes over four seasons.
