SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Wofford scored two first half goals and added an additional goal early on the second half to propel the Terriers to a 3-0 victory over the Gardner-Webb men's soccer team in the season-opener for both teams on Friday evening.
Joe Winchman earned his first shutout of the season for Wofford making two saves, while Matthew Swan faced seven shots in the game and made four saves in the defeat.
Wofford outshot GWU 9-2 in the first half, but the Runnin' Bulldogs ramped up their defensive efforts and held the Terriers to just two shots for the second frame.
The Terriers opened the scoring in the 30th minute on a goal by Nestor Jaramillo and doubled their lead just before half on a strike from Will Puckett, as Wofford would go into the halftime break up 2-0.
Despite holding Wofford to just two shots for the second half, one of those efforts found the back of the net in the 57th minute on a strike by Connor Donohue.
Craig Swaby led the Runnin' Bulldogs with three shots in the game and Hunter Frey added two, but Wofford would go on for the 3-0 victory.
Gardner-Webb will look to regroup with a strong week of training before its next game Sept 5, when it hosts Laurel University at 7:00 p.m.
