Birmingham, Ala.— Matthew Swan tied a season-high with nine saves but the Gardner-Webb men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Georgia State in the first game of the 'Soccer For A Cure Classic' hosted by the University of Alabama Birmingham.
Arjun Jung managed to have the lone shot on goal in the game for the Runnin' Bulldogs, while the Panthers were led by Eddie Wilding, Andy Anglade, and Tristen Trevino who each scored a goal.
Georgia State outshot Gardner-Webb 8-0 in the first half with the lone goal coming in the 40th minute by Andy Anglade. The Panthers had plenty of chances in the first half, but Swan was solid in net recording five saves, but the Panthers finally managed to get one past the keeper in the 40th minute. Anglade received a pass from Kwaku Adu and put a shot behind Swan for the only score of the half.
The best chance for the Runnin' Bulldogs would come in the 53rd minute when Arjun Jung fired a rocket, but the attempt was saved by the goalie Luke Oesterle.
Georgia State would strike again in the 60th minute on a strike from Eddie Wilding on an assist from Cory Plasker, and the Panthers would go on to add one more goal in the 69th minute to defeat Gardner-Webb 3-0.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will try and rebound in their next match when they take on the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
