BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Shelby Hooe scored both goals to lead the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Chattanooga in a non-conference match on Friday evening at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
The match started at 7:00 p.m., but after 32 seconds had elapsed severe storms caused more than a two-hour delay, with play not starting again till 9:21 p.m.
'It was good to get that early goal from Shelby. That helped us settle in and get a rhythm," said Gardner-Webb women's soccer head coach
Mike Varga. "UTC (Chattanooga) is a very organized team that makes it difficult to play them, but I thought we did a good job of moving off the ball and finding seems to play into."
Playing on a wet fast surface for much of the game, Gardner-Webb did not allow the adverse conditions to hinder its offense, as the Runnin' Bulldogs outshot the Mocs 24-8 and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Keely Brown made four big saves for GWU en route to her second career victory. Offensively,
Justine Ibarra led the attack with five shots, including three shots on net and
Sam Gutierrez provided a nice spark off the bench totaling four shots.
After the weather delay, Gardner-Webb came out quick with two quick attacks, and a shot by
Bri Nagle in the second minute went just wide.
Hooe found the net with her first of two goals in the match in the eighth minute. The senior midfielder put on a dribbling display and started her attack down the left hand side of the field, then cut towards the box and put a shot on goal which beat Katie Emig on the short side.
Chattanooga had a fantastic scoring opportunity in the 13
th minute, as the Mocs crossed the ball into Abby Linder, who headed the shot on goal which beat Brown, but
Brittany DeLoach was in the right place at the right time and cleared it off the line to keep the Mocs off the board.
Gardner-Webb held an 8-4 advantage in shots in the first half and would head into the halftime break holding a 1-0 advantage.
Hooe almost added her second of the match in the 58th minute, as she rocketed a shot from 25 yards out that came close to finding the back of the net, but smacked the cross bar to stay out of the net.
Just over eight minutes later, Hooe found the back of the net for her third of the season and second goal of the game. She attempted to cross the ball from just outside the 18-yard box, but her cross went over the goalie's head and into the far right side netting to extend the GWU lead to 2-0.
Gardner-Webb continued to push its attack in search of a third goal to put the game away, and in the 75
th minute
Jessica Ferguson put on a dribbling display beating multiple defenders, then she laid the ball off for Ibarra, who drilled one from just inside the box, forcing a diving save from Ebig. Ebig got up quick from the save and pounced on the rebound just as Sydney Davis was lunging toward the ball.
Chattanooga would respond with a goal from Skylar Brewer in the 77th minute to cut the GWU lead to 2-1.
Tori James came close to a third goal for the Runnin' Bulldogs as she nailed the cross-bar in the 83
rd minute, but Gardner-Webb would go on for the 2-1 victory.
"It's always good to get a win and I can't thank all the fans and families for sticking around after a long delay and supporting the team."
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action on Sunday, when they host VMI at 3:00 p.m.
