UAB Slips Past Men's Soccer Sunday Afternoon

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Frej Ramberg netted his first career goal but the University of Alabama at Birmingham used two first goals to defeat the Gardner-Webb men's soccer team 3-1 in the final game of the Soccer for a Cure Classic.

Matthew Swan was solid in net once again for the Runnin' Bulldogs with seven saves, but UAB outshot GWU 17-6 for the match, including holding a 9-2 advantage in the first half, while attempting 10 corner kicks to just three for the Dogs.

At the conclusion of the match, Jascha Gluckschalt was selected to the All-Tournament team for Gardner-Webb.

Ramberg and Arjun Jung each talled two shots offensively to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs, while Freddy Ruiz paced the Blazer offense with a game-high five shots, putting three of his attempts on goal, in 58 minutes of action.

UAB gernerated two corner kicks in the opening seven minutes of the first half, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities. Gardner-Webb would answer in the ninth minute when Jung put a bullet towards the UAB goal, but his attempt was saved by Joe Kuzminsky to keep the game scoreless.

The Blazers opened with the game's first goal in the 15th minute, when DeAndrew Robinson rocketed a shot towards the GWU goal, that smacked the post, but Ruiz corralled the rebound and slipped the ball past Swan.

Six minutes into the second half, Ruiz found the net for his second of the afternoon to send the Blazers to a 3-1 victory.
