First Set Rally Lifts Drake to Sweep of Gardner-Webb Saturday

IOWA CITY, Iowa --- Tyra Montour (Kennesaw, Ga.) tallied nine kills, and Anna Pashkova (Iowa City, Iowa) posted a match-high 15 digs to move within six of 2,000 for her career, Drake rallied from a 23-19 deficit in the first set en route to a sweep of Gardner-Webb on the final day of the Holiday Inn Hawkeye Challenge Saturday morning.

Drake (9-7) won the match by scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-15, compiling a hitting percentage of .207 while recording 42 kills, 47 digs and five service aces. Gardner-Webb (4-11) combined for 47 digs, 29 kills and seven blocks on the contest.

"We started well today but could not seem to get in sync after dropping the first set, while Drake did a good job finding connections," said head coach Leo Sayles. "We lost our offensive production, which really hurt us. Anna Pashkova remained consistent and earned all-tournament honors again."

Montour led the attack for Gardner-Webb with nine kills, pushing her weekend total to 29, as Jene Lee (San Dimas, Calif.) and Nicole Celarek (Bensenville, Ill.) each added five smashes. Lee and Kaelyn Dyson (Holly Springs, N.C.) both posted three blocks, while Justine Bowers (Dana Point, Calif.) dished out 21 assists. Pashkova tallied a match-high 15 digs to swell her weekend total to 51 and earn all-tournament honors for the third time this season. The Iowa City, Iowa native is now six digs shy of the 2,000-mark for her career, and needs just 10 digs to move into second on the program's all-time list.

Grace Schofield paced the Drake Bulldogs with 12 kills, as Kyla Inderski and Makena Schoene each added eight smashes. Chandelle Davidson dished out a match-high 24 assists and also dropped in two services. Inderski equaled Pashkova's match-high of 15 digs, as Michelle Thommi chipped in 10 digs of her own.

Gardner-Webb fought back from a 5-4 deficit in the first set, stringing together a 12-6 run to take a 16-11 lead following a smash by Devin Judge (Marietta, Ga.). After the Runnin' Bulldogs claimed a 23-19 advantage with a kill from Montour, Drake answered with six straight points, rallying for a 25-23 first set win to take a 1-0 lead in the match on a Katie Allen kill.

Drake carried the momentum into the second set, opening a 14-9 lead on an ace from Davidson. The Runnin' Bulldogs would trim the margin to 15-12 on a Montour smash before Drake answered with a 9-1 surge, stretching the advantage to 24-13 following a kill from Schoene. After Gardner-Webb fought off four set points to close the gap to 24-17, Drake stopped the bleeding and capped the set on an Inderski smash to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Bulldogs continued to dictate the tempo in the third, taking an early 8-5 lead before pushing the margin to 14-9 on back-to-back smashes by Schofield and Schoene. After Gardner-Webb closed the gap to 14-12 following an ace from Kacy O'Connor (Southport, N.C.), Drake responded with an 11-3 run to cap the set and seal the victory on three straight smashes by Katie Dulek.

Gardner-Webb returns to the court on Friday, September 25 when the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to Asheville, N.C. to open Big South Conference play against UNC Asheville at 7:00 pm.
