Women's Basketball Slides Past Charleston Southern

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Candace Brown scored 19 points and grabbed six boards to lead the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team to a 63-55 victory over Charleston Southern in a Big South Conference matchup Tuesday night in Paul Porter Arena.

With the victory, Gardner-Webb has now win three in a row and improves its record to 10-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while Charleston Southern falls to 8-8 and 3-4 in Big South Play.

The Buccaneers connected on 20-of-52 from the floor for a 38.5% clip compared to Gardner-Webb who knocked down 34.6% on its attempts (18-52), but it was the Runnin' Bulldogs that hit 24-of-33 from the free-throw line compared to just 12-of-17 for the visitors.

Alexus Hill and Tierra Huntsman were also in double-figures for GWU scoring 12 and 11 points respectively, while Alecia Hardy came off the bench for the Buccaneers and scored a team-high 12 points. Ke'Asia Jackson and Rachel Burns also scored double-digits for CSU with 11 points apiece to round of the double-figure scorers for both teams.

Charleston Southern outrebounded Gardner-Webb by a 38-32 margin, including a 10-8 lead in offensive boards, but neither side was able to captalize on second chance points as the Buccaneers scored nine points off offensive boards, while the Runnin' Bulldogs had just five.

Nayla Long opened with the game's first points to give the Buccaneers the lead, but Gardner-Webb responded with a 10-2 run over the next two minutes to take an eight points lead with 6:13 left in the opening 10 minutes.

Charleston Southern climbed back in the first period and took a 13-12 lead with just over two minutes remaining and CSU led 18-16 after one quarter of play.

The lead changed hands once again on Hill's three pointer with 7:57 left in the first half, but Charleston Southern grabbed the lead right back and headed to halftime leading 29-28. 

Brown hit two free-throws to give the Dogs their largest lead of the third quarter 32-29, but the Buccaneers outscored GWU 8-2 in the pain en route to a 45-41 lead after three quarters.

Brown's free-throw tied the game at 45 and Ky'Asia Stanford nailed a jumper to give GWU the lead for good. The Runnin' Bulldogs shot 55.6% in the final quarter and knocked down 11-of-13 from the charity stripe to send GWU to its third straight victory with a 63-55 victory.

Gardner-Webb returns to action Saturday afternoon when it takes on first-place UNC Asheville at 2:00 p.m. in Kimmell Arena.
