Gardner-Webb Opens Spring Strong At Art and Linda Mailett UNC Open

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Sarah Mitchell (Roswell, Ga.) won both the shot put and weight throw and Gardner-Webb placed 17 athletes in the top five en route to a strong showing at the Art and Linda Maillet UNC Open on Saturday.

The quartet of Jordan Davis (Atlanta, Ga.), Merideth Byl (Tucson, Ariz.), Sarah Perkins (Gorham, Maine) and Ivy Harris (Bailey, N.C.) finished fourth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:59, as Kayin Mujahid (Philadelphia, Pa.) placed third in the high jump with a mark of 1.63 meters. Elise Moffatt (Kennesaw, Ga.) finished second in the pole vault with a mark of 3.50 meters while Kailey Robinson (Connelly Springs, N.C.) and Karin Sastre (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) tied for ninth at 3.05 meters.

Ashleigh Cleveland (Raleigh, N.C.) placed eighth in the long jump with a mark of 5.09 meters, as Mitchell placed first in the shot put with a mark of 13.24 meters while also winning the weight throw with a toss of 16.02 meters.

Byl finished fifth in the shot with a mark of 11.91 meters, as Diamond Reese (Atlanta, Ga.) and Natasha Akbarizadeh (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) placed second and fourth with tosses of 15.31 and 15.02 meters, respectively. Josh Parks (Forest City, N.C.) and Christopher Lile (Waynesville, N.C.) placed fourth and fifth in the mile run with times of 4:34.47 and 4:36.05, respectively.

Gardner-Webb's quartet of Joseph Martin (Broadway, Va.), Darien Evans-Hensley (Lexington, N.C.), Caleb Silvey (Greenville, S.C.) and Josh Wembolua (Matthews, N.C.) finished fourth in the 4x400-meter relay with a mark of 3:22.00. Marcus Abraham (Charlotte, N.C.) placed third in the men's shot put with a toss of 15.81 meters, as Jordan Smith (Chesterfield, Va.) finished seventh with a mark of 15.19 meters.

Smith and Abraham finished 1-2 in the weight throw with marks of 16.22 meters and 14.95 meters, respectively, as Abraham eclipsed his previous personal record by more than a meter.

Gardner-Webb returns to action on Friday, January 29 at the Mountaineer Open in Boone, N.C.
