BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.-The Gardner-Webb Men's tennis team dropped their season opener to Georgia Southern 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Courts.
Benjamin Kaszas was the lone winner for the Runnin' Bulldogs at No. 4 singles. He picked up a victory over Nico de Groof 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. Kaszas also teamed up with Maximillan Scholl to take a 6-4 victory over Daniel Casablancas and Andrew Johnson at No. 3 doubles.
Nikita Zverkov and Yaroslav Prostakov at No. 1 doubles and Jonathan Walker and Paul Hogan at No. 2 doubles both lost in straight sets.
Despite the 6-1 defeat Gardner-Webb had three singles matches that were decided in three sets. Scholl fell to Rise Lanne 6-3, 2-6, 3-6 at No. 1 singles, while Hogan fell to Casablancas at the no. 5 position 2-6, 7-6, 4-6, and Walker fell to Johnson in a tight match at No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-7, 7-10.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action January 27, when it hosts USC Upstate at 2:00 p.m.
