BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb Men's tennis team turned out several strong efforts in a 4-3 home loss to USC Upstate.
The Runnin' Bulldogs won each of the three double's matches, but were unable to secure the necessary singles victories in order to defeat the Spartans. Yaroslav Prostakov paired up with Nikita Xverkov at No. 1 doubles as they handed a 6-4 loss to Ramon Simonetti and Jamie Yates. Jonathan Walker and Paul Hogan teamed up for a 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles while Maximillian Scholl and Benajmin Kaszas handed their Spartan counterparts a 6-3 loss at the No. 3 double's slot.
At No. 1 singles Scholl was defeated by Simonetti (6-4, 6-1). Zverkov and Kaszas were the lone single's winners for Gardner-Webb as they took home wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots respectively. Zverkov defeated Ignacio Garrido (6-2, 6-4), while Kaszas won over Matt Bennion (7-6, 6-3).
Prostakov and Lenhard Haupt's battle was the lone three set match of the contest at No. 3 singles. Prostakov took the first set 6-2 before losing consecutive and decisive sets (6-1, 6-4).
The loss drops Gardner-Webb to 0-2 on the spring season and GWU will return to action on Sunday afternoon at Davidson.
