Women's Basketball Falters At Presbyterian Saturday Afternoon

CLINTON, S.C.- Presbyterian shot 42.3% in the second half and knocked down 5-of-11 from behind the three-point arc and held the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team to just 31.3% shooting in a 60-53 victory Saturday afternoon in the Templeton Center.

With the victory, Presbyterian improves to 12-8 and moves into sole possession of second place in the Big South Conference standings with an 8-3 record, while Gardner-Webb drops to 13-8 and 7-4 in conference play.

Gardner-Webb shot 39.3% in the first half and held Presbyterian to 29.0% including 2-of-17 from behind the three-point arc, but the second half was a different story as the Blue Hose connected on 42.3% of its attempts and drilled five three-pointers compared to a 31.3% clip for GWU and 2-of-8 from long range.

Candace Brown, Alicia Quinn, and Celia Tibbs each hauled down seven boards and GWU outrebounded PC 41-38, including a 16-13 advantage on offensive boards and turned the rebounds into 13 second chance points, compared to just four for the Blue Hose.

Taylor Petty paced the PC offense with 16 points and hit 3-of-9 from three, while Janie Mills added 15 and Allie Wagner chipped in with nine points and 11 rebounds. Brown led GWU with 16 points and added two steals and Tierra Huntsman notched 14 points and knocked down 3-of-8 from three-point range.

Janie Miles drilled a three 14 seconds into the game to give PC a 3-0 lead and after a basket by Quinn, Rebecca Walker connected on a layup to give the lead back to PC.

Huntsman's three with 5:53 remaining in the opening 10 minutes tied the game at five and was the start of a 13-4 run over the final 6:31 of the quarter.

After Mile's three pointer to open the quarter, GWU clamped down on defense holding PC to 0-of-9 from behind the three-point arc for the remainder of the quarter.

The Runnin' Bulldogs continued to lead for the majority of the second quarter and Jenkins gave the visitors their largest lead 19-13 with 6:25 left in the first half, but Presbyterian scored 14 second quarter points and outscored GWU 10-6 over the final six minutes of the half, as GWU led 25-23 at halftime.

Just as in the first half, Miles came out and drilled a three to give the lead back to PC, but Huntsman answered back with a three of her own to put GWU up 28-26.

The Runnin' Bulldogs remained in the lead until Salina Virola's layup with 4:34 left put PC ahead 33-32, a lead which they would hold heading into the fourth quarter.

Miles drilled a three-pointer to push the Blue Hose lead to 10 (47-37), but GWU chipped away and cut the defecit to 36-53 on a free-throw by Brown, but the Blue Hose fought off the comeback for the 60-53 victory.

Gardner-Webb has a quick turnaround for its next game, when it welcomes Campbell to Paul Porter Arena Monday night at 7:00 p.m.
