BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Tierra Huntsman and Candace Brown each scored a game-high 15 points and the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team tied a season-high with eight three-pointers in a 70-35 victory over Campbell in a Big South Conference matchup Monday evening in Gore Arena.
Huntsman knocked down five three-pointers and the redshirt sophomore set a new career-high for three-pointers made in a single game. Her previous single game best was three, which she had in three different games.
The Runnin' Bulldogs led wire-to-wire in the victory and played great defense against Campbell, limiting the home team to just 25.4% shooting (15-59) including 22.2% in the second half, and held the Camels to just 1-of-14 from behind the three-point arc.
Gardner-Webb led 33-21 at halftime but put the game away with a big third quarter, outscoring Campbell 20-2 and holding the Camels without a field goal for the entire quarter.
Alexus Hill was also in double-figures for the Runnin' Bulldogs with 10 points and Olivia Parker was close to her eighth double-double of the season with 11 points and nine boards. Evelyn Adebayo came off the bench and had six points to set a new-career high, while Aunesha Williams added six points and seven boards.
Gardner-Webb jumped out to an early 9-2 lead over the first four minutes of the opening quarter. The Runnin' Bulldogs continued to hold the lead for the remainder of the quarter and behind 53% shooting in the opening 10 minutes, would lead 19-13 after one quarter of play.
The Runnin' Bulldogs had seven assists on 11 made field goals in the first half of play and knocked down 4-of-9 from distance.
Huntsman knocked down her third three-pointer of the game to open the second quarter to extend the lead to nine, but back-to-back layups by Coffer cut the Campbell defecit to 22-17 with just over 7:00 remaining in the half. The Runnin' Bulldogs ended the half on a 11-4 run to take a 33-21 lead into the halftime break.
The Runnin' Bulldogs played great defense down the stretch as Campbell ended the first half hitting just one of their last seven field goals attempts, including going scoreless for the final 5:13 of the second quarter.
Huntsman continued her fine play into the second half as she knocked down her fourth three-point to extend the GWU lead to 16 and the Runnin' Bulldogs held the Camels without a field goal in the third period and outscored Campbell 20-2.
Brown scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half and Gardner-Webb outscored Campbell 12-0 in the paint to send the visitors to a 70-35 victory. The victory was just the second for GWU in Buies Creek since Gardner-Webb joined the division I ranks in the 2000-01 season.
Gardner-Webb returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts High Point in Paul Porter Arena at 2:00 p.m.
