Gardner-Webb Pockets Fifth Straight Win With 83-61 Victory Over Radford

BOILING SPRINGS --- Harold McBride (Bronx, N.Y.) poured in a game-high 24 points, and Tyrell Nelson (Charlotte, N.C.) posted his seventh double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Gardner-Webb to a 83-61 win over Radford in Big South Conference play on Saturday evening in Paul Porter Arena.

With the victory, Gardner-Webb (10-8, 5-1 Big South) pushes its win streak to five and keeps paces with league-leading High Point (12-4, 5-0 Big South). The Runnin' Bulldogs knocked down 52.6 percent of their attempts from the floor on the night – including a 20-for-30 (66.7 percent) clip in the first half – while holding Radford (9-8, 2-3 Big South) to a field goal percentage of 34.9 percent.

Gardner-Webb edged the Highlanders on the glass, 39-38, while converting 16 Radford turnovers into 19 points. The Runnin' Bulldogs connected on 9-of-19 from downtown and 14-of-20 at the free throw line on the night.

McBride led all scorers with 24 points – including 15 in the first half - with an 8-for-12 night from the floor to go along with a game-and season-high nine assists. Nelson added his seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and a game-high 10 boards.

Isaiah Ivey (Georgetown, Ky.) chipped in 10 points with a trio of three-pointers, as Laquincy Rideau (West Palm Beach, Fla.) tallied three assists and a game-high four steals.

Rashun Davis paced Radford with 14 points on 4-of-10 shooting, including a 5-for-6 clip from the free throw line, as Justin Cousin and Taj Owens added eight and seven points, respectively. Ed Polite, Jr. and Darius Bolstad each pulled down seven boards for the Highlanders.

McBride got the Runnin' Bulldogs off to a strong start in the first half, hitting his first five shots to give Gardner-Webb a 20-14 lead with 10:55 left in the period. His fifth field goal would launch Gardner-Webb on an 18-10 run, which gave the Runnin' Bulldogs their first double-digit advantage of the night, 36-24, following a steal and a bucket by Nelson at the 4:50 mark.

The Runnin' Bulldogs closed the half with a 13-2 spurt, stretching the margin to 49-28 on an Ivey trey with 35 seconds left on the clock.

Radford fought back early in the second half, trimming the margin to 51-36 with 16:56 to play following four free throws from Davis. Gardner-Webb quickly countered with a 16-11 spurt, pushing the lead back to 20 at 67-47 after L'Hassane Niangane (Chalon, France) finished with a flush off a nifty steal and pass from Rideau at the 9:39 mark.

The Runnin' Bulldogs capped the victory from there, as Gardner-Webb maintained at least a 16-point margin down the stretch to seal its fifth straight Big South victory.

Gardner-Webb is off until next Saturday, January 16 when the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to Asheville, N.C. to take on Big South co-leader UNC Asheville (12-5, 5-0 Big South) at 4:30 pm in Kimmel Arena.
