BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team had four players score in double-figures as it defeated High Point 82-70 in a Big South Conference women's basketball matchup Saturday afternoon in Paul Porter Arena.
With the victory, Gardner-Webb has now won two straight games and improves its record to 9-6 overall and 302 in Big South action, while High Point falls to 3-11 and 2-3 in conference play.
Candace Parker led the Runnin' Bulldogs with a game-high 18 points and seven boards, while Olivia Parker added 14 and Tierra Huntsman and Alexus Hill each chipped in 12 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Emma Bockrath paced the Panthers with 17 and Kaylah Keys and Haleigh Hatfield also were in double-figures with 13 and 11 points respectively.
Both teams shot the ball well on the afternoon as High Point was 29-of-55 for a 52.7% clip, while Gardner-Webb was not far behind connecting on 28-of-57 for 49.1%. Brown knocked down both of her three-point attempts and the Runnin' Bulldogs shot 50% from behind the three-point arc (5-10) and limited the Panthers to just 1-of-6 from long distance.
The Runnin' Bulldogs outrebounded the Panthers 34-27 for the game, including a 13-8 advantage in offensive boards and converted the rebounds into 19 seconds chance points, while holding High Point just four.
Keys scored the game's first bucket in the paint to give the Panthers their only lead of the first quarter. Brown grabbed her own miss and put in the rebound to tie the game at two. Gardner-Webb held the lead for the remainder of the quarter leading by as much as seven on a layup by Hill with 1:48 left in the opening quarter (21-14), but High Point ended the period on a 6-0 run to cut the defect to one at the end of the quarter.
High Point continued the momentum into the second quarter with a 7-2 run over the first two minutes to give the visitors their largest lead of the game 27-23, but the Runnin' Bulldogs answered with their own 7-0 run to take the lead back and would ultimately head into the break leading 40-35.
A layup by Hatfield cut the GWU lead to five with 8:28 left in the third quarter, but the Runnin' Bulldogs led by as much as 16 in the second half as they shot 53.8% from the field and hit 12-of-16 from the free-throw line and went on for the 82-70 victory.
