CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Gardner-Webb finished eighth at the rain-shortened Tar Heel Intercollegiate this past weekend. The tournament was limited to two Friday rounds due to heavy rains in the Triangle area.
The Runnin' Bulldogs shot a 292 over its first 18 holes Friday, then rallied for a 287 in the second round to finish three over par as a team.
UNC Wilmington fired a 567 (-9) to win the event, with host North Carolina shooting a 570 (-6) to finish second. Gardner-Webb finished four strokes ahead of former Big South Conference mate Coastal Carolina, with VCU, Virginia Tech, Elon and Furman rounding out the 12-team field.
Vincent Blanchette and Chris Jones led Gardner-Webb individually, tying for 13th. Blanchette overcame a tough first round (74) to fire the third-best round of any golfer over what wound up the final 18 holes of the tournament. He shot a 69 in Friday's second round to finish at 143 for the event.
Jones was consistent, shooting rounds of 72 and 71 to finish tied with Blanchette at one under par.
Eli Kow (75-73-148) tied for 43rd place, while Aaron Thomas (71-80-151) and Jake Kennedy (77-74-151) tied for 55th.
Coastal Carolina's Alfredo Ruiz (68-70-138) finished tied with UNC Greensboro's Jake McGlone (71-67-138) for first place. Both were six under par individually.
Gardner-Webb gets back on the links next weekend, traveling to Burlington, N.C., for the Elon Phoenix Invitational (October 16-18).
