Women's Soccer Wins Third In A Row With 3-0 Decision At UNC Asheville Wednesday Night

Box Score

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Freshman Eline Glamsland scored two goals and Gardner-Webb got a pair of assists from senior Brandi Arey to key a critical 3-0 road win at UNC Asheville Wednesday night.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (7-7-2, 4-2-0) won their third match in a row, and keeper Keely Brown notched her third consecutive shutout.

"I thought Asheville came out with a lot of energy early on their home field," said head coach Mike Varga. "We scored against the run of play and that seemed to rattle them, then we forced them to chase after that second goal. After those two scores we were able to close out the match. This was a very important win for us."

The win puts Gardner-Webb squarely in the mix of the Big South Conference regular season race with three matches remaining.

The Runnin' Bulldogs struck relatively early in Wednesday's match, with Arey finding Samuelle Grove for a 1-0 lead at the 17:02 mark. The tally came after Asheville (7-9-2, 2-4-0 Big South) got off a pair of shots during a quick rally in the 15th minute.

Grove provided the fuel for Gardner-Webb's second goal, crossing to Glamsland for a header and a 2-0 lead with 22:28 on the clock. It was the reigning Big South Conference Freshman of the Week's third goal of the season.

The Runnin' Bulldogs wasted little time pulling further away in the second half, as Arey's cross to Glamsland was finished again for a 3-0 lead in the 49th minute.

Brown was strong between the posts again for Gardner-Webb, recording eight saves in a dominant effort. It was her 11th career shutout and sixth of the 2016 season.

The Runnin' Bulldogs were outshot 22-12, but only eight of Asheville's chances were on frame. Gardner-Webb put six of its shots on frame, with three finding the back of the net.

Glamsland finished with four shots (three on goal) and classmate Stine Kleppe had three shots (one on goal). Arey recorded her two assists in just 33 minutes, while Grove scored her three points in an efficient 28 minutes on the field.

The Runnin' Bulldogs are back in action for another key road match on Saturday, taking the short trip to Winthrop for a 1:00 pm match in Rock Hill, S.C.
