BLACKSBURG, Va. – Alexus Hill scored 11 points on a 5-for-9 shooting performance, but No. 25 Virginia Tech was too much for the Runnin' Bulldogs as the Hokies defeated Gardner-Webb, 76-42, on Monday night.

Hill was one of two Gardner-Webb (3-4) players to reach double figures in scoring as Tierra Huntsman added 10 points.  Virginia Tech (8-0) held GWU to 23.2% from the floor, while shooting at a 43.8% clip.  The Hokies outrebounded the Runnin' Bulldogs by a 53-32 margin and had more points in the paint, 42-16.

Virginia Tech opened the game with a quick 5-0 spurt until Kiera Currie was able to put the Runnin' Bulldogs on the board with a layup with 6:54 to go in the first period.  The Hokies would push their lead up to 12 points in the opening frame, but a pair of free throws by Lovely Locklear with 16 seconds on the clock would set the score at 20-10 at the end of the first period.

Gardner-Webb would pull within eight points at 24-16 with 7:01 remaining in the second period following a three-pointer from Huntsman, but the Hokies would close the period with a 12-3 run to hold a 17 point lead at the half, 36-19.

Virginia Tech would expand its lead to 22 points within the first 90 seconds of the third period, yet the Runnin' Bulldogs would respond with a quick 4-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Currie with 5:36 to go in the period to pull within 18 points at 41-23.  The Hokies would go on to finish the third period with a 27 point lead at 56-29.

Virginia Tech opened the fourth period with a string of eight unanswered points, swelling its lead to 35 points until Huntsman stopped the run with a layup with 6:51 on the clock to set the score at 64-31.  The Runnin' Bulldogs would hit three consecutive free throws, including a pair from Morgan Pointer with 5:38 to go pull within 30 points at 64-34, which would be the smallest margin the in the final period as the Hokies would go on to win by 34 points at 76-42.

The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action this Saturday afternoon, taking on Central Florida at 2:00 pm in Orlando, Fla.
