Gardner-Webb's Cornwell Named Arby's SoCon Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb's Boyce Cornwell has been named Arby's SoCon Conference Wrestler of the Week on the heels of a pair of clutch performances.

Cornwell (Conyers, Ga. / Heritage HS) went 2-0 last week to lead Gardner-Webb to team wins over No. 24 Duke and The Citadel.

The redshirt junior came through in the tightest of matches against the Blue Devils. With Gardner-Webb trailing 18-16 heading into the final bout of the night, Cornwell found himself down 1-0 with less than a minute remaining in the third period. He came through, however, pulling off a reversal with just over 20 seconds on the clock to capture a 2-1 win over Brendan Walsh – delivering GWU to a 19-18 team win.

It was Gardner-Webb's second win over a ranked opponent in as many weeks and first win over Duke since 1998.

The heavyweight capped another milestone win for his team on Friday night, controlling his bout against Joe Bexley for a 5-2 decision. That finished off a 28-12 win over The Citadel, which pulled the Runnin' Bulldogs into a three-way tie for first in the SoCon standings and marked the first win over The Citadel in 15 years.

The wins improved Cornwell to a career-best 17-5 on the season and 10-2 in dual matches.

Cornwell's efforts this season have paced Gardner-Webb (7-5, 5-1 SoCon) to new program records for dual wins (7) and Southern Conference wins (5) in a season. He is the second GWU wrestler in three weeks to be named Arby's SoCon Wrestler of the Week, joining Austin Trott (Jan. 27).

The Runnin' Bulldogs can wrap up a share of their first Southern Conference trophy with a win over Davidson on Wednesday night. Match time is set for 7:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena.

The match will air live on The Big South Network (bigsouthsports.com).
