Softball Splits Doubleheader With Austin Peay Friday

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- The Gardner-Webb softball team blasted three home runs as it split a doubleheader with Austin Peay Friday afternoon at the Brinkley Softball Stadium.

Amanda Gomes and Scarlett Harris each collected a combined five RBI between the two games and Kaylee Wacaster went 6-for-8 with six runs, including blasting her first career home run onto the roof of the Brinkley Softball Practice Facility in the bottom of the sixth inning of the doubleheader.

The Governors prevailed in the first game of the afternoon, as the two teams combined for 35 hits, 27 runs, and 22 runners left on base.

Kacy Acree went 3-for-5 with a home run, five RBI, and three runs, while Gomes was excellent at the plate for GWU, as the redshirt senior went 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBI.

The Govenors took no time notching their first run, as Chandler Groves walked to begin the game and Acree followed up with a two-run blast over the right field fence to give Austin Peay a 2-0 lead.

Gardner-Webb cut the defecit to one on an RBI single by Gomes to score Wacaster, as GWU trailed 2-1 after the first inning.

Austin Peay and Gardner-Webb exploded in the second inning combining for eight runs on seven hits and the visitors held a 7-4 lead after two innings.

Kendall Vedder, Rikki Arkansas, Carly Mattson all recorded an RBI for Austin Peay in the top of the third, but Gomes came right back in the bottom of the third with a solo bomb to left field as Austin Peay continued to lead 12-5 at the end of three innings.

Danielle Liermann recorded an RBI single in the top of the fourth, but Gardner-Webb exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the inning to keep the game within reach.

Jill Blank singled to score Emma Megal and two batters later Gomes singled up the middle to score Wacaster, while Harris followed with an RBI single to the shortstop.

Madi Lewis smashed a sacrifice fly to left field which scored Gomes as Gardner-Webb batted through its entire lineup in the inning, but trailed 13-10 after four innings.

Each team would score two runs in the fifth, but neither team was able to score in the sixth or seventh and Austin Peay prevailed in game one 15-12.

Mackenzie Thompson tossed a complete-game for the Dogs in the second game, scattering five hits and striking out four to earn her first victory of the season.

The Runnin' Bulldogs jumped on the board first as Rachel Cumiskey drove in Wacaster on an RBI single to center field and two batters later Harris plated Cumiskey, as GWU led 2-0.

Vedder cut the Gardner-Webb lead to one on an RBI single in the second, and the score would remain the same until the bottom of the third when Gomes blasted her second home run of the day over the left field wall to put GWU ahead 3-1.

Harris and Lewis each drove in a run in the fifth and Wacaster drilled a two-run bomb in the sixth to send GWU to the 9-2 victory for its first win of the season.

Gardner-Webb returns to action Tueday when it hosts South Carolina State for a double header with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
