LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Merdith Byl (Tucson, Ariz.) set five personal records en route to a second-place finish in the pentathlon, as Jordan Smith (Chesterfield, Va.), Jalin Lawson (Fort Gaines, Ga.), Kayin Mujahid (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Joseph Martin (Broadway, Va.) each earned an individual victory at the 2016 Liberty Quad on Friday evening.
Byl turned in one of the top all-around performances of her career with a second-place showing in the pentathlon, totaling a personal-best 3,146 points while winning the shot put with a new PR of 10.78 meters. The senior also established new PRs in the 800-meter run (2:31.08), 60-meter hurdles (10.02 seconds) and the high jump (1.51 meters).
Mujahid took home the individual title in the high jump with a mark of 1.65 meters, as Martin won the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.20 seconds. Lawson finished tied for the top spot in the triple jump, setting a new PR with a mark of 14.70 meters, while Smith won the weight throw with a toss of 17.96 meters.
Jordan Davis (Atlanta, Ga.) and Ivy Harris (Bailey, N.C.) both finished in the top five in the 200-meter dash, placing third and fifth, respectively with times of 26.49 and 27.10 seconds. Harris' mark was good for a new personal record. Rachel White (King, N.C.) and Sydney Davis (Granite Falls, N.C.) both set new PRs in the mile, posting times of 5:56.13 and 5:58.77, respectively, as Davis broke the six-minute barrier for the first time in her career.
Natasha Akbarizadeh (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) and Diamond Reese (Atlanta, Ga.) each established new personal-bests in the weight throw with tosses of 16.18 and 15.61 meters, respectively, while Sarah Mitchell (Roswell, Ga.) finished third in both the shot put and the weight with marks of 13.50 and 16.52 meters.
Josh Wembolua (Matthews, N.C.) put together a pair of outstanding performances in the 60-meter dash, shattering his PR in the prelims with a time of 7.25 seconds before placing eighth in the finals with a mark of 7.33 seconds. Both times came in under his previous best of 7.36 seconds.
Christopher Lile (Waynesville, N.C.) and Matthew Cook (Connelly Springs, N.C.) each turned in a personal-best time in the one-mile run, finishing with marks of 4:34.09 and 5:02.15, respectively, as Josh Parks (Forest City, N.C.) placed second in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:41.83.
Quenton Jones (Moore, S.C.) and Clay Hamilton (Blair, Neb.) established new PRs in the triple and weight throw, respectively, with marks of 14.04 and 13.13 meters. Paul Schmacher and Titus Hamilton (Blair, Neb.) both placed in the top five in the long jump, as Marcus Abraham (Charlotte, N.C.) and Smith finished two-three in the shot put with marks of 16.05 and 15.68 meters, respectively.
Gardner-Webb is back in action next Friday, February 19 when the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to Boone, N.C. to participate in Appalachian State's Pre-Conference Open.
