BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Olivia Parker recorded her third straight-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team moved into sole possession of third place in the Big South standings with a 51-40 victory over Presbyterian on Tuesday night in Paul Porter Arena.
Entering Tuesday's matchup, Gardner-Webb and PC were tied for third in the conference standings with 10 wins, but the victory improves GWU's record to 17-9 and 11-5 in the Big South, while PC falls to 14-10 and 10-5 in the conference standings.
The Runnin' Bulldogs led 20-16 in a defensive first half, but outscored the Blue Hose 25-2 in the third quarter to propel them to victory.
Presbyterian did not score a single field goal in the third quarter as its only points came on two free-throws by Taylor Petty.
Alexus Hill was also in double-figures for Gardner-Webb with 13 on 5-of-8 from the floor, while Petty paced PC's offense with 14 points, including knocking down 4-of-9 from behind the three-point line.
Both teams struggled to generate any offense in the first quarter as GWU shot just 4-of-13 from the field for a 30.8% clip, while PC went just 2-of-16 (12.5%).
Gardner-Webb jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on a layup by Alicia Quinn and Parker followed with a three-pointer with 7:54 to go in the opening period.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would not score again till the 4:07 mark when Parker made 1-of-2 from the line as GWU led 10-5 after 10 minutes.
Back-to-back baskets by Parker and Kiera Currie pushed the Gardner-Webb lead to 10 just under a minute into the second quarter, but Allie Wagner's jump shot with 3:29 cut the defecit to 20-16 heading into the halftime break. Wagner's shot was the last field goal of the quarter for either team as the two sides combined to go 0-for-8 over the final 3:29 of the half.
The Runnin' Bulldogs put the game away with a big third quarter as GWU connected on 10-of-13 from the floor, including a perfect 3-for-3 from Parker and held the Blue Hose without a field goal for the entire quarter. Hill scored all 13 of her points in the third quarter and was 5-of-6 from the field, including 3-for-4 from three-point range.
Gardner-Webb pushed its lead to as much as 27 in the third quarter and led 45-18 after three quarters of action.
Presbyterian went into a full court press in the final quarter forcing 8 turnovers by the Runnin' Bulldogs and converted the TO's into 10 points. The Blue Hose shot 56.3% from the field and limited GWU to just 2-for-8, and the visitors outscored GWU 22-6 in the final quarter.
Walker's jumper with 11 seconds left cut the Gardner-Webb lead to 11, but the Runnin' Bulldogs held on for the 51-40 victory.
Gardner-Webb returns to action Saturday when travels to Charleston, S.C. to face Charleston Southern. Saturday's tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
