Softball Downs Hartford Friday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Mackenzie Thompson tossed a three-hit complete game shutout to lead the Gardner-Webb softball team to a 7-0 victory on Friday afternoon at the Brinkley Softball Stadium.

With the victory, Gardner-Webb won its fourth straight game and moves to 4-3 on the season, while Hartford falls to 0-1.

Kaylee Wacaster continued her hot start to the season going 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and two RBI and Callie Thornton went 2-for-3 with two runs, including smashing her first career home run in the bottom of the second inning.

Amanda Gomes fared well for GWU in the victory, going 2-for-3 on the afternoon with two runs and an RBI.

The Runnin' Bulldogs and the Hawks each had a hit in the first inning but neither team was able to score a run, as the game remained scoreless after one inning of play.

Gomes reached first base on an error by the Hawks and Harris singled to right center, as GWU had runners on the corner with nobody out.  Gibbons fouled out to the left fielder for the first out of the inning, but Gomes was able to score on a throwing error by the left fielder.

Thornton gave the Dogs a 3-0 lead, as she took a 1-0 pitch and smashed a two-run bomb to left center for the first home run of her career.

Gomes plated GWU's fourth run of the game in the fourth inning on an error by the Hawks' third baseman, and in the bottom of the fifth, Gomes drove in Wacaster on an RBI single.
