Softball Belts Out 9 Runs In Victory Over Hampton Sunday

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Freshman Callie Thornton went 2-for-3 with a run and a career-high five RBI to lead the Gardner-Webb softball team (6-4) to a 9-1 victory over Hampton (3-1) in five innings on Sunday afternoon at the Brinkley Softball Stadium.

Mackenzie Thompson was fantastic once again for the Runnin' Bulldogs, as she scattered six hits over five innings and allowed just an unearned run to earn her fourth win of the season.

Jill Blank and Amanda Gomes each collected two hits on the afternoon and also drove in a run, and Scarlett Harris also had a productive day at the plate for the Dogs, drawing three walks and adding two runs.

The Runnin' Bulldogs jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning as they smacked three hits and scored four runs to take a 4-0 lead. Kaylee Wacaster walked to begin the inning and advanced to second on a single by Blank. Blank and Wacaster then advanced 60 feet as they both stole a base. After Cumiskey made the first out, Gomes came through with an RBI double to right field which gave GWU runners on first and third. Harris drew a walk to load the bases and Thornton smacked a double to left center to clear the bases and score all three runners.

Thorton was at it again in the third as she plated her four run of the game on an RBI single and later in the inning came around to score on an RBI single by Blank.

The freshman third baseman recorded her fifth RBI of the game in the fourth, as she reached base on a fielders choice which scored Allie Barrick and gave the Dogs the 9-1 victory.

Gardner-Webb returns to action next weekend when it travels to Birmingham, Ala. to compete in the Alabama State, which kicks off Friday when GWU faces Howard at 12:00 p.m.
