February 29, 2016 | Women's Basketball
CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Candace Brown has been named the Big South Conference women's basketball player of the week, announced the league office Monday afternoon.
This is Brown's third time this season to earn the conference's weekly award and is the fourth time a Runnin' Bulldogs has received the award. Olivia Parker also was named Player of the Week, Feb. 15.
Brown guided Gardner-Webb to victories against UNC Asheville (57-51) on Senior Night and in the last conference appearance at Coastal Carolina (61-51) on Saturday afternoon. The victory over the Bulldogs Tuesday completed the sweep of UNCA, as Gardner-Webb won 58-56 in Kimmell Arena earlier this season.
The senior guard averaged a double-double this past week averaging 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds. Brown shot 35.3% from the field and also added five steals. Against UNCA in her final regular-season game in Paul Porter Arena, Brown scored 12 points and hauled down 11 rebounds, eight of which were on the offensive end, and Saturday afternoon Brown scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed nine boards.
Gardner-Webb takes to the road for its final regular-season game of the year Saturday, when it takes the trek to Farmville, Va. to face the Longwood Lancers. Tip-off is schedule for 2:00 p.m.
