Tyrell Nelson Nets Two Big South Conference Postseason Honors

CHARLOTTE --- Gardner-Webb junior forward Tyrell Nelson (Charlotte, N.C.) has been named to the Big South All-Conference Team for the first time in his career, earning a spot on the second team in addition to his second consecutive nod on the All-Academic Team, announced league officials Tuesday with the release of its annual awards.

Nelson led the team in several statistical categories during the regular season, pacing the Runnin' Bulldogs in both scoring (13.7) and rebounding (7.4) while shooting 56 percent (159-of-284) from the floor. The junior forward recorded 10 double-doubles – two more than he totaled in the previous two seasons combined – which leads the team and ranks second in the conference.

Four 20-point performances highlighted a strong year for Nelson, as the Charlotte native scored in double figures in all but four games. Nelson tallied at least 15 points in 13 games, including a 27-point, 16-rebound outing in the Runnin' Bulldogs' 71-68 win over Campbell on January 6.

The Preseason All-Big South First Team honoree reached several key milestones this season, becoming the fifth player in the program's Division I era to surpass both the 1,000-point and 500-rebound plateau in his career – accomplishing both feats within minutes of one another during Gardner-Webb's 67-66 win at Longwood on January 3. Nelson currently ranks second in GWU's Division I era in field goal percentage (57.2%) and fourth in both points scored (1,182) and rebounds (612).

Gardner-Webb returns to the court on Thursday, March 3 when the sixth-seed Runnin' Bulldogs square off against the 11th-seed and host Campbell in the first round of the Big South Conference Championships. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 pm in Campbell University's Gore Arena.
