SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team (4-8) suffered a 6-1 defeat to Wofford College (7-2) on Thursday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were victorious in the number three doubles position, as well at number four singles, and pushed the number five singles spot to a third set tiebreak, but ultimately fell 6-1 to the Terriers.
The pairing of Catherine White and Sarah Rieckmann defeated Catherine Marin and Mareli Sanchez 7-6, 5-0 at the number three doubles spot. Rieckmann and White improve their doubles record to an impressive 9-2 on the season and have won four straight matches.
Rieckmann performed well in her singles match, as she defeated Lauren Reid 7-5, 7-6 in the number three position. The win is the third straight victory for Rieckman and improves her record to 5-7 on the season.
In the number five singles spot, White and Samantha Russell needed a second set tiebreak to decide the match. White and Russell split the first two sets, with White winning the first set 6-4, while Russell recorded a 6-3 victory in the second, and it was ultimately Russell that would prevail in the tiebreak 10-6.
Laura Fermosel in similar fashion to White, went to a second set tie-break to decide her match at number six singles against Taylor Carlson. Fermosel captured the first set 6-1, while Carlson took the second set 6-3, and it was the Terriers that took the tiebreak 6-4.
Gardner-Webb returns to action Sunday, when it welcomes Radford to Boiling Springs for a Big South battle. Sunday's action is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
