
Men's Tennis Loses Close Match At South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C.- The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team (3-8) dropped a 4-3 match against South Carolina State (2-4), on Saturday afternoon at the Hardeep Judge Tennis Center.
Maximilian Scholl and Nikita Zverkov secured the doubles point with a tough fought 7-6 victory in the number one position, and pushed all but one singles match to a third and deciding set.
Adam Schmidt and Johan Fors were also victorious at number three doubles, as the two picked up a big 6-3 victory to give the Runnin' Bulldogs momentum heading into singles play.
Scholl showed his prowess on the court as he dropped the first set 6-2 to Martin Figura, but regrouped at the break, and captured the final two sets to win the match, 6-3, and 6-1 respectively.
Zverkov won the first set at number two singles, 6-4, but came up short in the final two sets, falling 6-4 and 6-4 to Jakub Vitek.
Paul Hogan dropped the number three singles match in straight sets (6-3, 6-1), but Yaroslav Prostakov countered with a victory at number four singles. Prostakov won the opening set in commanding fashion, 6-1, but dropped a 7-6 decision in the second set, but regrouped to win 6-4 in the final set.
The final two matches provided much excitement as each match required a third and deciding set. Schmidt dropped the opening set 6-1, at #5 singles and extended the match with a 7-6 win in the second set, but it was Aleksander Stupar that ultimately came out with the victory, winning 6-4 in the final set.
Jonathan Walker faced off against Edgar Diaz in the #6 singles match, and it was GWU who came out running with a 6-2 win in set one. However, Diaz countered with a 6-0 decision in the second set, and ultimately S.C. State won set three with a 6-1 victory.
Gardner-Webb returns to action Monday afternoon, when it welcomes Winthrop to the Webb Tennis Courts. The first serve on Monday is set to get underway at 2:30 p.m.
