BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team (4-8, 1-2) secured their first Big South victory Tuesday afternoon at The Webb Tennis Courts by notching a 4-3 win over Winthrop (6-7, 0-1).
The Runnin' Bulldogs fell behind 1-0 after dropping the double's point, but came back to win four of the six single's matches in order to capture the match.
Paul Hogan and Jonathan Walker defeated Michael Chen and Adity Gokhale 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, while Winthrop claimed the No. 1 and No. 3 slots.
Benjamin Kaszas and Jonathan Walker defeated their opponents in straight sets to help start the Gardner-Webb comeback. Kaszas handed Steven Patrick a (6-4, 6-2) loss at No. 4 singles, while Walker beat Gokhale (7-5, 6-2) in the No. 6 position.
While Nikita Zverkov and Adam Schmidt lost their respective matches in tough battles, Gardner-Webb once again trailed 3-2 to the Eagles with two matches still undecided.
With the match on the line, both sophomore Yaroslav Prostakov and freshmen Maximilian Scholl continued their winning streaks in order to help lift the Runnin' Bulldogs to victory.
At No. 3 singles Prostakov went the distance of three sets by knocking off Chen (6-4, 6-7, 6-4) and launching his win streak to five.
The deciding match came down to the No. 1 singles position in which Scholl prevailed for Gardner-Webb. He improved his record to 6-6, including his third straight win by defeating Diego Quiroz in three sets (7-5, 6-7, 6-4).
Gardner-Webb will be back in action Thursday afternoon when they take on Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Cayce, South Carolina with a start time set for 3 p.m.
