CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Gardner-Webb's Maximilian Scholl has been named the Big South Conference men's tennis freshman of the week, announced the league office Wednesday afternoon.
Scholl posted a perfect 4-0 record in the top two positions and led the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 1-1 record, with a 6-1 victory over Fairfield, and a narrow 4-3 defeat at South Carolina State.
The freshman competed at both the top doubles and singles position against Fairfield. Scholl teamed up with Nikita Zverkov and won 7-6 in doubles play to secure the doubles point for Gardner-Webb, and also picked up a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-0) over Brad Orban.
Againt South Carolina State, Scholl paired up with Zverkov at the top doubles spot to defeat Martin Figura and Jakub Vitek, 7-6, and after dropping the first set to Figura, stormed back to take the final two sets, 6-3, and 6-1 respectively at the top singles spot.
Just a freshman, Scholl leads the Runnin' Bulldogs with a 6-6 record at the top singles spot and posts a 2-1 record with Zverkov at the #1 doubles position..
In his last 10 matches, Scholl posts an impressive 6-4 record and currently rides a three-match win streak.
Gardner-Webb is coming off a big 4-3 victory over Winthrop for its first Big South victory of the season, and travels to Cayce, S.C. to face Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Thursday, before returning home Sunday, to host Radford at 1:00 p.m.
