@GWUBaseball Defeats Wofford, 5-3, Friday Evening

Box Score

BOILING SPRINGS – Brad Haymes struck out eight batters and tossed a complete game for the second week in a row, as Gardner-Webb capitalized on a first-inning outburst to defeat Wofford, 5-3, Friday evening.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (18-2) have now won 19 consecutive home contests, a streak dating back to last season.

Wofford (12-7) got on the scoreboard first, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. An RBI groundout by Brett Hash, followed by a throwing error by GWU first baseman Patrick Graham that scored Max McDougald gave the Terriers the early advantage.

Gardner-Webb quickly responded in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs off of five hits to claim the lead for the remainder of the contest.  A two-RBI double by Collin Thacker to center field, and a RBI single through the left side by Graham gave the Runnin' Bulldogs the early lead.

GWU tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the second, as Taylor Fisher was able to score from second base on a wild pitch followed by a throwing error by Wofford catcher Carson Wain.

The Terriers looked to come back in the top of the eighth inning, as McClain Bradley singled through the right side of the field to score Alex Maisch, but Gardner-Webb answered in the bottom half of the inning as Matt Simmons scored from a RBI single up the middle by Thacker to set the score at 5-3.

Haymes (4-0) hurled his second consecutive complete-game effort, and has gone at least 8.0 innings in each of his last three starts. The Tightsqueeze, Va., native has struck out 42 batters and walked three batters in 37.0 innings of work this season – and lowered his ERA to 1.95 on the season with Friday's effort.

The Runnin' Bulldogs had 10 hits in the game, with Danny Sullivan (3-for-4), Thacker (2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI, run) and Tyler Best (2-for-4, 2B, run) leading the way. Fisher (1-for-4, 2 runs), Graham (1-for-4, RBI), and Paul Trick (1-for-3, BB) also had base hits for GWU.  Thacker extended his hitting streak to 20 games with his first-inning 2-RBI double.

Matthew Millburn (4-1) took the loss for Wofford, allowing nine hits and four earned runs in 7.0 innings of work. Jordan Accetta pitched the eighth inning for the Terriers, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.

The Terriers had eight hits Friday, with McDougald (2-for-3, run, BB) and Bradley (2-for-4, RBI) leading the way.

The two teams will square off again tomorrow afternoon in Spartanburg, S.C.  First pitch is set for 3:00 pm at Russell C. King Field on the campus of Wofford College.
