Gardner-Webb Baseball Drops Non-Conference Game At Wofford, 13-9

SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Wofford used a three-run first inning and added five runs in the third to defeat the Gardner-Webb baseball team 13-9, in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field.

Gardner-Webb scored nine runs on 12 hits, but the Terriers hit the ball hard, scoring 13 runs on 15 hits. Collin Thacker led the way at the plate for the Runnin' Bulldogs going 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Danny Sullivan also added two hits and scored a run on the afternoon.

Gardner-Webb jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, collecting two hits in the top of the first inning. Eric Jones drew a one-out walk and Sullivan followed with a single to left field. Thacker continued his great hitting early on in the season, as he took a 1-0 pitch and drilled a single to left field to give the Runnin' Bulldogs the lead. Patrick Graham once again loaded the bases as he was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With the bases full of Runnin' Bulldogs, Tyler Best managed to get his bat on a 1-2 pitch, but hit a roller to the third baseman, who proceeded to throw home for the force out. Jacob Walker had a chance to tack on more runs for the Dogs, but he flew out to center field to end the inning.

Wofford stormed back quickly in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. The Terriers totaled three runs on three hits to go ahead of GWU. McClain Bradley stole hit an RBI single to tie the game and later stole home to give Wofford the lead. Cody Miller singled home Brett Hash as Wofford led 3-1 after the first inning.

Sullivan, Thacker, and Graham all had one out singles to load the bases for GWU in the top of the third inning, and Best hit into a fielders choice, but Sullivan scored on the play to cut the deficit to one. Walker came up to bat with the bases loaded, but the Terriers manged to get Walker to fly out to escape the jam giving up just the one run.

In the bottom of the fourth, Wofford took a commanding 8-2 lead, scoring five runs on four hits. The first three batters of the inning reached base, before Jeremy Walker got Cody Miller to ground into a fielders choice for the first out of the inning. Kody Ruedisilli plated three runs with a double to the right center gap and would later come around to score the eighth run of the game.

Jacob Walker and Mason Fox both launched solo home runs in the sixth inning and the Runnin' Bulldogs added five runs in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough as Wofford held on for the 13-9 victory.

Gardner-Webb returns to action tomorrow when it faces Wofford in the final game of a three-game series at 5:00 p.m. The Runnin' Bulldogs will face Lafayette prior to the matchup with the Terriers. First pitch against the Leopards is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
