ASHEVILLE, N.C.- The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team had its three-game win streak snapped on Wednesday afternoon, losing 5-2 in a Big South Conference match at the Asheville Racquet Club.
With the victory, UNC Asheville improves to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in Big South Play, while GWU falls to 5-9 and 1-3 in conference action.
The Runnin' Bulldogs picked up a big win at the top doubles match and picked up victories at the no. 1 and no. 6 singles match.
The pairing of Maximilian Scholl and Nikita Zverkov were victorious in the no. 1 doubles match by a 6-4 decision over the Asheville duo of Alex Crocker and Brett Landau. The duo of Scholl and Zverkov won their second straight match and improve to 4-2 on the season.
The no. 2 doubles match saw Josh Swindler and Henry Patten defeat Jonathan Walker and Paul Hogan 6-2, while UNCA claimed the doubles point with a 6-4 win in the third doubles match.
Scholl was at it again in singles play picking up a big victory in the top spot. The freshman won the first set, 6-2 but dropped the second set 6-3, but regrouped to claim the final set 1-0.
Jonathan Walker also was victorious for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the no. 6 spot, picking up a 6-1, 5-4 straight-set victory over Daniel Kripak. Walker's victory was his four straight win in singles play, and improves his overall record to 7-6.
Despite the victories in the no. 1 and no. 6 spots, UNCA record straight set wins in four of the six singles matches to claim a 5-2 victory over Gardner-Webb.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action next Tuesday, when they welcome Wofford to the Webb Tennis Courts. Tuesday's match is set for 3:00 p.m.
