BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- The Gardner-Webb tennis team fell 7-0 to Winthrop, in a Big South Conference match on Tuesday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Courts.
Winthrop captured all three doubles matches to begin the afternoon and were pushed to a third set in the no. 1 singles match, but the Eagles ended up taking the match by a 7-0 score.
The Eagles won the first two doubles matches 6-1 and 6-0 respectively, but the pairing of Catherine White and Sarah Rieckmann jumped out to an early 3-2 lead in the final doubles match, but Alica Garcia and Tijana Uzelac ended up taking the match by a 6-4 decision.
Rokia Sacko dropped the opening set in the top singles spot, 6-1, but regrouped and took the second set 6-1, but came up just short in the final set 6-4.
Stina Magnusson put up a good fight at no. 2 singles dropping the first set 7-5, but lost 6-0 in the second set to lose the match.
Sandra Bolstad and Rieckman fell 6-2, 6-1, and 6-1, 6-2 in the no. 3 and no. 4 singles match respectively for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
White played the first set extremely close at no. 5 singles, 7-6, but Monica Aquado took the match with a 6-0 decision in the second set.
Laura Fermosel fell short in the final match of the day, losing 6-4 and 7-5 to Megan Kaufmann.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Monday, when it welcomes Radford to the Webb Tennis Courts. First serve on Monday is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
