Gardner-Webb Softball Splits With Campbell To Open Conference Play

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- The Gardner-Webb softball dropped the first of two games with Campbell, but behind Mackenzie Thompson's complete-game pitching performance, the Runnin' Bulldogs won the second game 8-1 to split the doubleheader.

Campbell plated two runs in the first and added three runs in the second en route to a 6-4 victory to defeat GWU, but the Runnin' Bulldogs came back in the night cap and scored two in both the first and third innings and four in the sixth for the 8-1 win.

Thompson tossed seven strong innings for GWU, allowing just one run on six hits and totaled three strikeouts to improve her record to 8-4 on the season.

Jill Blank drove in five runs to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs, while Rachel Cumiskey and Amanda Gomes each totaled three hits and drove in four and three RBI respectively.

Game 1- Campbell 6, GWU 4

Campbell used a trio of pitchers to lead it to victory, as Katie Baker tossed 4.1 innings and struck out five, while Caroline Smith and Amber Schisler each tossed an inning in relief and combined to allow just one hit between them.

The Fighting Camels jumped out to a quick lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first and added three more in the second for a 5-0 lead.

Baker was on fire early, not allowing a hit by GWU until the bottom of the fourth inning, when her no-hit bid was ended on Cumiskey's double to left center field.

The Runnin' Bulldogs would load the bases in that same inning with just one out, but Baker managed to strikeout Scarlett Harris for the second out and got Devyn Terry to ground out to escape the jam without surrendering a run.

Gardner-Webb loaded the bases yet again in the fifth with just one out, but this time Blank came through with a huge double to plate three runs and Cumiskey drove in Blank on a sacrifice fly to cut the defecit to one.

Lizabeth McCurry launched a solo shot to begin the sixth for an insurance run and that was all the Camels needed, as GWU stranded two runners in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh for the 6-4 victory.

Game 2- Campbell 1, GWU 8

The Runnin' Bulldogs received great production from its top four hitters, going 8-for-13 with six runs and eight RBI.

Campbell once again jumped out to the lead scoring its first run on an RBI double by Rachel McCollum.

Kaylee Wacaster led off the bottom of the inning with a double down the left field line and Blank followed with a single and a stolen base to give the Dogs runners on second and third with no outs.

Cumiskey plated both runners for GWU as she smacked a two-RBI double to the left center field gap for the 2-1 lead.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the third inning when Cumiskey and Gomes launched back-to-back solo blasts to extend the lead to 4-1.

Gardner-Webb put the game out of reach scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Blank tallied two RBI and Gomes then plated two additional runs with a single up the middle.

Thompson shut down the Camels in the seventh and sent Gardner-Webb to the 8-1 victory.

The two teams square off tomorrow in the rubber-match with the first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
