16 New Personal Records Set Tone For Gardner-Webb At Winthrop Friday

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Michaela Williams (Nashville, N.C.) set a new personal record by more than 30 seconds in the 5,000-meter run on Friday to highlight more than a dozen new PRs for Gardner-Webb at the Winthrop Invitational.

Gardner-Webb's runners combined for nine new personal bests on the track in Friday's prelims, including a pair of new PRs for Anna Harris (East Bend, N.C.) and Amy Turlington (Hendersonville, N.C.) – each set both in the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Anna Harris posted a mark of 1:03.20 in the 400 and 28.38 seconds in the 200, while Turlington finished with times of 1:06.46 and 30.87 seconds, respectively.

Marcquel Woodard (Gainesville, Ga.) established a new PR in the 400-meter prelims, crossing the line in 49.42 seconds to finish 11th – three spots out of Saturday's finals in a field of 58 runners. Ivy Harris (Bailey, N.C.) and Lauren Mahoney (Rosman, N.C.) each set a new personal-best in the 200-meter dash with marks of 26.71 and 33.76 seconds, respectively.

Rachel White (King, N.C.) was the top finisher for Gardner-Webb in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the line with a new PR of 20:41.69, as Williams finished with a time of 21:00.62 – more than 30 seconds faster than her previous best in the event.

Natasha Akbarizadeh (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada) broke 57 meters in the hammer throw for the first time in her career, finishing third with a PR of 57.05 meters, as Sarah Mitchell (Roswell, Ga.) posted a mark of 43.36 meters.

Clay Hamilton (Blair, Neb.) set a new personal record in the men's hammer with a mark of 35.23 meters, as A.J. White (Hurricane, W.Va.) and Jordan Smith (Chesterfield, Va.) placed 11th and 13th, respectively, with throws of 46.62 and 43.91 meters. White added a PR of 16.06 meters in the shot put en route to a second-place showing, as Marcus Abraham (Charlotte, N.C.) and Smith finished third and fourth, respectively, with marks of 15.83 and 15.82 meters.

Mitchell and Diamond Reese (Atlanta, Ga.) placed seventh and ninth, respectively, in the women's shot put with marks of 13.15 and 12.77 meters, as Moriah Mason (Decatur, Ga.) set a new PR in the event with a toss of 11.12 meters. Jalin Lawson (Fort Gaines, Ga.) finished fifth in the long jump with a personal record of 6.47 meters, while Benjamin Sayles (Shelby, N.C.) placed seventh and won his heat with a mark of 6.42 meters.

Kayin Mujahid (Philadelphia, Pa.) placed seventh in the high jump with a mark of 1.61 meters, as Kailey Robinson (Connelly Springs, N.C.) tied her PR in the pole vault and finished eighth in the event with a mark of 3.40 meters. Megan Melton (Riverside, Calif.) placed ninth with a vault of 3.30 meters, while Karin Sastre (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) set a PR of 3.05 meters.

Gardner-Webb will wrap up the weekend at the Winthrop Invitational on Saturday.
