ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Jordan Smith (Chesterfield, Va.), Clay Hamilton (Blair, Neb.) and Marcus Abraham (Charlotte, N.C.) each set a personal record in the discus throw, as Gardner-Webb combined for eight PRs and nine top-10 performances on the final day of the Winthrop Invitational Saturday.
Merideth Byl (Tucson, Ariz.) provided one of the top headlines of the weekend for the Runnin' Bulldogs, winning the heptathlon with a personal-best 4,489 points – more than 300 points more than second place. The senior added PRs in the 100-meter hurdles (16.79 seconds), 200-meter dash (25.44 seconds) and the 800-meter run (2:22.83) en route to her first career heptathlon title.
Ashleigh Cleveland (Raleigh, N.C.) finished third in the heptathlon, setting PRs in points (4,143), 100-meter hurdles (15.68 seconds), high jump (1.58 meters), 200-meter dash (26.85 seconds) and the 800-meter run (2:42.02). Amanda Hall () placed sixth with personal-bests in points (3,176), high jump (1.31 meters) and javelin throw (27.07 meters).
Claire Cates (Hillsborough, N.C.) and Jenna Ford (Wasilla, Alaska) opened the day for Gardner-Webb in the developmental 1,500-meter run, finishing fourth and 13th, respectively, with times of 5:11.50 and 5:19.75. Sydney Davis (Granite Falls, N.C.) placed 21st with a time of 5:26.49 while Lauren Kilpatrick (Jacksonville, Fla.) set a new PR with a mark of 5:37.31.
Haden Baker (Morganton, N.C.) posted a new personal best of his own in the men's developmental 1,500 with a time of 5:14.54 –more than 30 seconds faster than his previous mark of 5:48.03. Gabby Cortese (Royston, Ga.) led the line for Gardner-Webb in the women's 1,500-meter finals, finishing 15th with a time of 5:05.81.
Josh Parks (Forest City, N.C.) and Christopher Lile (Waynesville, N.C.) each set a new PR in the men's 1,500-meter finals with times of 4:08.34 and 4:13.32, respectively. Parks finished 10th in the event while Lile placed 14th. Ivy Harris (Bailey, N.C.) posted her second personal-best of the weekend in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing sixth with a mark of 1:04.65.
Paul Schumacher placed seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 12.42 meters, as Seaver Wait (Candler, N.C.) finished tied for seventh in the high jump with a jump of 1.85 meters. A.J. White (Hurricane, W.Va.) and Smith placed fourth and fifth in the discus, with White posting a mark of 48.57 meters and Smith setting a new PR with a toss of 48.38 meters – nearly three meters past his previous best.
Abraham and Hamilton each recorded a new personal best in the discus with marks of 41.94 and 38.34 meters, respectively, as Sarah Mitchell's (Roswell, Ga.) high mark of 40.02 meters was good for seventh in the women's event.
Gardner-Webb returns to action next Friday, April 1 at the Vert Klassic Meeting in High Point, N.C. on the campus of High Point University, and the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla.
