FARMVILLE, V.A. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team (8-9, 2-3) notched their fifth win in six tries Wednesday afternoon by defeating Big South Conference foe Longwood (6-10,0-5 BSC) 5-2.
Freshmen Maximilian Scholl won his eighth consecutive match to help lead the way for Gardner-Webb. He defeated Florian Uffer (6-2, 6-4) at No. 1 singles. Scholl also helped claim a doubles victory teaming up with Nikita Zverkov in the No.1 slot as they beat Alfonso Castellano and Julian Farthing 7-6.
The Runnin' Bulldogs claimed all three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead.
Benjamin Kaszas, Adam Schmidt and Jonathan Walker all three picked up strong singles victories on the afternoon. Kaszas defeated Rosen Ilchev (7-6, 6-3) at the No. 4 position. Schmidt won a tight one in three sets at No. 5 singles. He defeated Bharani Sankar (6-1, 3-6, 6-4). In the No. 6 slot Walker made quick work of Lachlan Manser (6-2, 6-1). The win was Walker's fourth in a row.
At. No. 2 singles Zverkov lost in a three-set thriller (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) to Castellano. Yaroslav Prostakov also suffered a loss to Farthing (6-0, 6-1) at the No. 3 position.
Gardner-Webb will look to continue their hot streak Friday afternoon when they travel to Liberty. The Runnin' Bulldogs can even their Big South record at 3-3 with a win over the Flames. The start time is set for 12 p.m.
