BOONE, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team (6-11) dropped a match on the road to Appalachian Sate (5-10) 5-2 Wednesday afternoon at the Varsity Courts.
Gardner-Webb took an early 1-0 lead by claiming two of the three doubles matches. Rokia Sacko and Mary Walker Mixon claimed the No. 2 spot defeating Melissa Machado and Megan Mullen 6-2. Catherine White and Sarah Rieckmann also picked up a victory at the No. 3 slot by beating Taylor Bygrave and McKayla Zupan 7-5.
The Mountaineers proceeded to win five of the six singles matches in order to seal the victory.
Sacko was the lone singles winner for the Runnin' Bulldogs as she beat Clare Cox (6-4, 6-4) at the No. 1 position.
White and Laura Fermosel both fought tough in their matches before falling in three sets. White was defeated by Heidi Swope (7-5. 3-6, 7-6) at No. 5 singles, whil
Fermosel fell to the hands of Zupan (1-6, 6-3, 6-0) in the No. 6 slot.
Sandra Bolstad, Stina Magnusson and Rieckmann all lost in straight sets in their respective matches.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action Sunday at 2 p.m. when they host Big South Conference foe Charleston Southern.
