Gardner-Webb Softball Drops Twinbill To Charlotte

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- The Gardner-Webb softball team (9-8) dropped both games of a doubleheader to Charlotte (15-4) on Tuesday afternoon at the Brinkley Softball Stadium.

The 49ers got complete-game pitching performances by Lexi Betancourt and Haley Wiseman, as the pitching duo limited the Runnin' Bulldogs to a combined seven hits on the afternoon.

Amanda Gomes and Jill Blank each had two hits on the day to pace the offense for GWU. Despite totaling just seven hits in the two games, the Runnin' Bulldogs drew six walks, but were unable to do anything with the base on balls, stranding 15 baserunners.

Game 1- Charlotte 8, Gardner-Webb 0 (5 inn.)

Betancourt got the nod for the 49ers in game one and tossed a complete-game, allowing just three hits and struck out 11, for her ninth victory of the season.

Charlotte jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Kiersten Berrier singled to leadoff and Grace Beatty hit a fly ball to right field, which was misplayed by Bre Blakley allowing both runs to score.

Megan Gibbons and Blank struck out to begin the home half of the inning, but Rachel Cumiskey and Gomes followed with back-to-back singles, but Scarlett Harris struck out to end the threat.

Haley Pace smacked a two-RBI single for the 49ers in the fourth and Charlotte added three runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth, as it won game one 8-0 in five innings.

Game 2- Charlotte 8, Gardner-Webb 0

Haley Wiseman improved to 6-2 on the season, as she tossed a complete-game shutout allowing just four hits and struck out 11.

Grace Beatty put Charlotte on the board with an RBI single to left center and Berrier followed with an RBI double in the second, as Charlotte led 2-0 after two innings of play.

The 49ers plated five runs in the third on five hits and took advantage of two Gardner-Webb errors, as Charlotte led 7-0 at the conclusion of the third inning.

Gibbons hit a one-out double in the fifth, but GWU was unable to do anything with the baserunner and Charlotte added a run in the seventh and completed the two-game sweep with an 8-0 victory.

Gardner-Webb returns to action this weekend, when it travels to Washington, D.C. to compete in the George Washington University Capital Invite.
