BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Bradley Hallman hurled 6.2 shutout innings and closer Wil Sellers picked up his seventh save of the season to finish off a 5-0 win over Campbell Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (23-12, 3-6 Big South) snapped an 11-game road losing streak in Big South Conference games, dating back to a 2-1 win at Winthrop on March 22, 2015. With the win Sunday, Gardner-Webb surpassed its 2015 season win total.
Hallman (4-2) was steady on the mound Sunday, scattering five singles (two infield singles) and working nicely around three walks. A double play in the first inning got things off on the right foot and Hallman stranded a Campbell runner with a strikeout in the fourth – and stranded two more in the fifth. The Denver, N.C, sophomore rolled eight ground ball outs and fanned one to pick up the win.
Sellers came on with two outs in the seventh and stranded a pair, retired Campbell in order in the eighth and recorded a pair of strikeouts to end the game in the ninth.
Gardner-Webb scored all the run support it would need in the fourth, getting started when Tyler Best doubled down the left field line with one away. Paul Trick drove Best home with an infield single and moved into scoring position himself on a throwing error.
Trick advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Danny Sullivan's fielder's choice RBI for a 2-0 lead.
Sullivan ignited a rally in the seventh, legging out an infield single and scoring on Eric Jones' two-out single into left field for a 3-0 edge.
A two-run burst in the eighth inning effectively put the game on ice. Matt Simmons collected a pinch hit single and pinch runner Evan Hyett put pressure on the Camels when he stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch with two outs in the inning. Hyett scored on an error in right field.
Collin Thacker stepped in and plated Trick with a two-out single for what would be the final margin.
Gardner-Webb had six hits in the game, with Simmons (1-for-1), Best (1-for-4, 2B), Trick (1-for-4, RBI), Thacker (1-for-3, RBI), Sullivan (1-for-4, RBI) and Jones (1-for-4, RBI) collecting on each.
Campbell (18-16, 5-4 Big South) also had six hits – one single from six different batters – on Sunday.
Michael Horrell (3-3) took the loss, fanning eight and walking one in 6.2 innings of work. He allowed just three hits and two earned runs.
Gardner-Webb will close out its nine-game road swing on Wednesday night, traveling down I-85 south to take on USC Upstate in Spartanburg. First pitch is set for 6:00 PM on April 13.
