Gardner-Webb & Blanchette Victorious at the 2016 Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Gardner-Webb men's golf team took home the top team and individual honors as both junior Vincent Blanchette and the team finished at the top of the leaderboard at the 2016 Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational hosted by Wofford College at The Country Club of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, S.C.

As a team Gardner-Webb carded rounds of 283, 281, and 283 at the 6,648 yard, par-72 golf course finishing the event with a total score of 847, -17 under-par, five shots clear of the next finisher Invitational host Wofford College.

Blanchette carded all three of his rounds in under-par fashion this week as he shot 68 (-4), a masterful 65 (-7), and 69 (-3) to set the new Invitational 54-hole scoring record in relation to par with a total score of 202, -14 under-par to claim the medalist honors.

The Quebec native led the tournament in birdies made as he holed 18 over his three-rounds of play combined with eagles on two separate occasions at the Invitational. Blanchette also led the field in Par-4 scoring average shooting a scintillating average of 3.73, -8 under-par.

Posting a strong performance of his own at the event was red-shirt junior Chris Jones. Jones finished in a tie for fourth-place overall on the leaderboard aiding the GWU victory with three rounds under-par of his own carding 68 (-4), 71 (-1), and 70 (-2) to finish with a 54-hole score of 209, -7 under-par.

Aaron Thomas continued to play well and consistent for the Runnin' Bulldogs at the Invitational as the sophomore carded three rounds of even-par 72 earning himself a share of 21st-place and playing a huge factor in the GWU victory. Thomas like Blanchette holed two eagles at the Invitational.

Rounding out the Gardner-Webb lineup at the Invitational was a pair of sophomores as Jake Kennedy shot rounds of 80, 73, and 72 to finish tied for 64th-place with a total score of 225, +9, while Jonathan Henry finished just one stroke behind him from rounds of 75, 79, and 72 to tie for 67th overall with a combined total of 226, +10.

The victory at the Invitational this afternoon marked Gardner-Webb's first team title since the 2015 Cape Fear National Intercollegiate on March 16, 2015 in Leland, N.C. (Cape Fear National).

Today's Invitational also marked the last tournament of the regular season for Gardner-Webb. The men's golf team will look to carry this good form into the 2016 Big South Men's Golf Championship next week, April 18-20, at The Patriot Golf Club in Ninety-Six, S.C.
