BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Callie Thornton's walk-off single in the top of the seventh lifted the Gardner-Webb softball team (18-21, 4-8 BSC) to a 3-2 victory over Presbyterian (21-19, 7-7 BSC) on Thursday afternoon at the Brinkley Softball Stadium.
Presbyterian's Sydney Siegler stifled GWU's offense for most of the afternoon, as she took a perfect game into the sixth inning, but was broken up on a lead-off single by Megan Champion.
Devyn Terry was solid on the mound for Gardner-Webb, tossing her sixth complete-game and allowed just four hits and had a strikeout to earn her fourth victory of the season.
Presbyterian broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third, as Megan Anderson roped a single to right field which scored Erin Ruff and Jenna Harris for the first two runs of the afternoon.
PC would continue to hold the lead until the sixth inning. Champion led off with GWU's first hit and advanced to second on a single by Allie Barrick. Kaylee Wacaster was the next to bat for Gardner-Webb, and took a 2-2 pitch and roped a double to left center, scoring Barrick and Champion to tie the game.
Terry sent down PC 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh and the Runnin' Bulldogs carried the momentum into the bottom of the seventh. Scarlett Harris led off the inning with a double to right field and was then substituted for Sam Harrell, who came on as a pinch runner. Megan Gibbons put down a great bunt, advancing Harrell to third base with just one out. Megan Champion popped out for the second out of the inning.
Thornton came to bat with a chance to win the game, but was down to her last strike, but the freshman hit the softball right into shallow left field to plate the winning run for Gardner-Webb.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action this weekend, when they host Longwood for a three-game set. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and a single game Sunday, which is set for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch.
