April 14, 2016 | Women's Tennis
CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Gardner-Webb senior Rokia Sacko has been named Second Team All-Conference Singles, while the doubles pairing of junior Mary Walker Mixon and Sacko have been named Second Team All-Conference, announced the Big South Office Thursday morning.
Sacko and Mixon both earned All-Conference accolades for the first time in their careers, and are the first players from GWU to earn postseason honors since Erica White and Jenny Lunde claimed the honors in 2013.
The lone senior this season for the Runnin' Bulldogs, Sacko posted a 9-11 overall record and ranked sixth in the Big South with a 4-5 record in conference play. Sacko ended the season well for GWU winning three of the last five matches, including two her last three outings in Big South play.
Sacko and Mixon put together an impressive season posting a 12-8 record at no. 2 doubles, and ranked third in the league with a 6-3 mark. After dropping four straight matches to begin the season, the duo reeled off four straight wins, and ended the season playing their best tennis, winning five-straight matches.
A standout off the court, Sacko was also named to the All-Academic Team for a second straight year. The native on Montreal, Canada posts an impressive 3.47 cumulative in the challenging nursing program at Gardner-Webb.
Gardner-Webb returns to the courts tomorrow, when it faces the no. 10 seed Presbyterian at 2:00 p.m.. in the first round of the Big South Tournament. The winner of Friday's match will face the no. 2 seed Winthrop, Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
