Women's Tennis Defeats Presbyterian 4-3 In Big South Tournament First Round

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Big South Conference Tournament, with a 4-3 victory over Presbyterian on Friday afternoon at the Cook Tennis Center.

The Runnin' Bulldogs took the early lead capturing the doubles point to begin the afternoon. Presbyterian responded taking the first three singles matches, but GWU claimed the final three matches, with Sandra Bolstad clinching the match for GWU with the fourth team point at no. 3 singles. Bolstad dropped the opening set 7-6, losing 9-7 in the tiebreak, but regrouped to take the final two sets, 6-1 and 6-1 respectively.

Rokia Sacko and Catherine White also posted victories for GWU. Sacko won the opening set at no. 1 singles, 6-3, dropped the second set 6-0, but came back to capture the match winning 6-3 in the third and final set.

White was dominant in her match at no. 5 singles picking up a straight-set victory over Claire M. Andrews, 6-0 and 7-5.

The Runnin' Bulldogs took the doubles point with victories in the no. 2 and no. 3 spots. Sacko and Mary Walker Mixon were the first to finish, defeating Tracy Johnson and Andrews, 6-2. Presbyterian claimed a 6-3 victory in the top spot.

The all important doubles team point came down to the third and final match and it was White and Sarah Rieckmann that came through with the 6-4 victory over Nicole Croxton and Celine Shepers to give the Dogs the early advantage.

Gardner-Webb advances to tomorrow's quarterfinal match, where it will face the no. 2 seed Winthrop at 12:00 p.m. The Eagles defeated GWU in the matchup earlier this season in Boiling Springs, 7-0.
