BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- The Gardner-Webb (18-23, 4-10 BSC) softball team dropped a Big South Conference doubleheader to Longwood (25-15, 11-3 BSC) on Saturday afternoon at the Brinkley Softball Stadium.

Longwood's pitchers were the story on Saturday afternoon, as the pitching duo of Elizabeth McCarthy and Sydney Gray combined for 24 strikeouts and limited the Runnin' Bulldogs to just 7-for-48 at the plate for a .146 average. McCarthy totaled 11 strikeouts in the first game and Gay fanned 13 batters in game two.

Despite the struggles at the plate, GWU kept both games within reach as it received two complete-game pitching performances. Devyn Terry threw a complete-game, allowing two earned runs and tied a season-high with four strikeouts. Summer Darnell got the nod in game two and did not disappoint for the home team. The junior pitcher allowed just six hits and three earned over seven innings.

Amanda Gomes and Kaylee Wacaster each had two hits on the afternoon, while Wacaster added to her league-best 13 doubles, notching two more on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1- Gardner-Webb 1, Longwood 3

After Terry sent down the Lancers 1-2-3, Gardner-Webb took the momentum and jumped out to a quick 1-0, as Gomes rocketed a double to left center, driving in Jill Blank.

Gardner-Webb continued to hold the lead until the sixth inning, but Emily Murphy smashed a two-run shot over the center field fence to give the Lancers the lead. Longwood notched an insurance run in the seventh and held on for the 3-1 victory.

Game 2- Gardner-Webb 1, Longwood 3

Karleigh Donovan gave LWU the lead, as she smacked an RBI single up the middle to open with the game's first run.

Gardner-Webb had a chance to tie to take the lead in the third, as Wacaster was hit by a pitch and proceeded to steal second and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Jill Blank drew a walk, but Cumiskey struck out to end the inning.

Gardner-Webb got the crowd going in the sixth as Scarlett Harris rocketed a solo home run to tie the game at one.

However, the lead would not last long, as Kelsey Sweeney put the Lancers back on top with a two-run shot in the seventh to send Longwood to the 3-1 victory.

The two teams will play the third game of a three-game series tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
