LYNCHBURG, V.A. – The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team (8-15) was defeated by Winthrop (17-5) 4-0 in the Big South Tournament quarter-finals Saturday afternoon. The loss to the 70th ranked Eagles ends the season for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Winthrop claimed the doubles point by winning at the No. 1 and 3 spots. Marian Humberg and Lauren Proctor got by Stina Magnusson and Sandra Bolstad 6-2 at No. 1, while Tijana Uzelac and Alice Garcia blanked Catherine White and Sarah Rieckmann 6-0 at No. 3.
The Eagles made quick work at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as well as the No. 6 slot to secure the victory. Rokia Sacko put up a fight against No. 1 Proctor, but fell in straight sets (6-1, 6-4). In the No. 2 slot Magnusson was also defeated in straight sets by Garcia (6-0, 6-2).
Laura Fermosel was the victim at No. 6 singles, losing to Megan Kaufmann (6-1, 6-0).
Winthrop also had the lead in the other three matches that went unfinished. Bolstad, Rieckmann and White were all fighting in the second set.
The tough loss to a talented Winthrop team ends Gardner-Webb's season at 8-14.
