BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Longwood (26-15, 12-3) scored two runs in each of the first three innings and received a dominant pitching performance from Elizabeth McCarthy, to defeat the Gardner-Webb softball team (18-24, 4-11), 9-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Brinkley Softball Stadium.
McCarthy was dominant on the mound for a second-straight day for the Lancers, as she allowed just one hit over five innings, and struck out five to earn her 14th win of the season.
McCarthy was one-out away from a no-hit performance, but Allie Barrick recorded GWU's first hit of the afternoon, as she hit a blooper into shallow right field, that landed on the foul line.
Gardner-Webb struggled in the three-games this weekend against the Lancers, batting just 8-for-66 at the plate for a .121 average and striking out 29 times.
Carly Adams gave the Lancers a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first, hitting a single and came around to score, as Devyn Terry threw the ball towards first base, which hit Scarlett Harris' glove and richocheted into the right field corner, which cleared the bases.
Longwood scored two runs in both the second and third innings and Emily Murphy smashed a three-run bomb in the fourth to send the Lancers to the 9-0 victory.
Gardner-Webb takes the trek to Johnson City, Tennessee for its final non-conference game of the season, when it faces ETSU in a doubleheader, scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
