BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team (9-10, 3-4) lost a close battle to Coastal Carolina (16-3, 6-0) 4-3 Saturday afternoon, which halted a three game winning streak.
Prior to the match Garnder-Webb honored their three seniors. Jonathan Walker, Nikita Zverkov and Benjamin Kaszas were all honored for their hard work and dedication over the past four years.
The Runnin' Bulldogs jumped out front 1-0 by claiming two of the three double's matches, but were unable to secure enough singles matches to claim the victory. Maximilian Scholl and Zverkov paired up to defeat Pedro Leme and Vuk Velickovic 7-5 at the No. 1 spot. Walker and Paul Hogan also won their match at No. 2 doubles beating Sebastian Schneider and Jabor Al-Mutawa 6-4.
Scholl and Walker were the lone singles winners for Gardner-Webb, but were both huge wins in their own respect. Scholl defeated Al-Mutawa in three sets (5-7. 6-3, 6-2). The win extended his streak to 10 in a row and pushed his overall season record to 13-6. Walker, a senior also extended a winning streak to five by taking down Luis Faria at No. 6 singles (6-2, 4-6, 6-3).
Kaszas had the best chance to snag another victory at No. 4 singles, but fell in three sets. He was defeated by Schneider (2-6, 6-1, 6-1).
Zverkov, Yaroslav Prostakov and Adam Schmidt all battled, but lost their respective matches.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action Monday afternoon when they take on non-conference foe Charlotte. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. at Charlotte.
