Coastal Powers Past Gardner-Webb Softball Saturday Afternoon

CONWAY, S.C.- Coastal Carolina swept a doubleheader against the Gardner-Webb Softball Team on Saturday afternoon at the CCU Softball Stadium. The Chanticleers took game one 9-0 (5 inn.) limiting GWU to just two hits for the game, and completed the sweep of the doubleheader with a 4-2 victory in game two, scoring all four runs on Morgan Noad's grand slam.

With the victory, Coastal Carolina improves to 30-19 overall and 13-5 in conference play, while Gardner-Webb falls to 18-27 and 4-12 in the Big South.

Rachel Cumiskey led the Runnin' Bulldogs on the afternoon collecting two hits in five plate appearances, while Scarlett Harris and Kaylee Wacaster each drove in a run for GWU. Harris drilled her seventh home run of the season and has now homered in three of the last six games.

Game 1- Gardner-Webb 0, Coastal Carolina 9

Kelsey Dominik got the start for CCU in game one, and went 4.0 innings allowing just one hit, while Taylor Rahach came on in relief to start the fifth inning, and allowed a hit in her lone inning of work.

Coastal scored nine runs on nine hits, while Megan Champion and Allie Barrick each had a hit for GWU, and Harris drew a walk.

The Chanticleers scored two runs on three hits to take a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Alexis Alvino drove home the first run on an RBI single and one batter later, Bri Chiusano drove in Timi Tooley with an RBI single to center field.

Coastal added a run in the third and put the game away scoring six runs in the fourth and took the first game of the day 9-0.

Game 2- Gardner-Webb 2, Coastal Carolina 4

Gardner-Webb got great pitching in game two, as Mackenzie Thompson tossed a complete game, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and struck out one. The Chanticleers countered, sending Ashley Cuilette to the mound and she threw 6.1 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits. Mackenzie Conrad came on in relief with one out in the seventh inning and allowed two hits in 2/3's of an inning.

Cumiskey totaled two hits to lead GWU and five other players each had a hit for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Amanda Gomes smashed a single in the top of the first, but GWU was unable to do anything with the base runner, but the Runnin' Builldogs came back in the second and took a 1-0 lead on Wacaster's RBI single, which scored Cumiskey.

Coastal totaled two hits in both the second and third innings, but Thompson buckled down on the mound and did not allow a run for the Chanticleers.

The Chanticleers did break through in the fifth, as they loaded the bases and the Big South's All-Time leader in home runs, Noad smashed a grand slam to put Coastal up 4-2.

Harris cut the deficit to two with a solo shot in the seventh, but Coastal went on for the 4-2 victory.

The two sides will play the third game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
